Editing and Writing

 Aerospace and Electronics

  • Designed, wrote, and published 250-page illustrated flight-crew operating manual for jet airliner test program without any previous knowledge of jet engines. Three-month "crash program" required rapid assimilation of flight-test requirements, engineering data and blueprints, and substantial self-education in jet-engine design and operation, propulsion theory and fluid dynamics, avionics and electronics, electrical systems, airframe structure, and flight-test procedures. Clarity and accuracy were critical to flight crew safety.
  • Senior or sole editor for various companies on multimillion-dollar, multivolume proposals; engineering and marketing briefings, reports, presentations and brochures, and strategic quality and business plans.
  • Selected by MagneTek Defense Systems as editor-publisher for multinational proposal team.

Law

  • Author, The Patent Principle: The General Circulation Status of ‘Special Interest’ Newspapers.  Researched and wrote definitive 55-page legal analysis that led California to reverse a recently enacted public notice policy. The extraordinary First Amendment clash pitted a handful of small legal and business newspapers, represented by the author, against the mainstream newspaper publishers' association and the State of California.
  • Selected by Douglas Aircraft Company attorneys as editor of federal contract claims worth $1.5 - $2 billion.

Journalism

  • Substantial deadline editing, rewriting of wire, staff, and feature pieces; headline writing, photo editing, graphic design, page layout; development, planning, and execution of regular and special features.
  • Some 50 California newspapers have published my articles on law, government, and technology issues.
  • Improved several newspapers' design and content. Earned high credibility with readers, the judiciary, public officials, major news media.
  • Helped develop, then edited and produced the California Register, a weekly journal of official quasi-judicial state administrative rulings and opinions (California attorney general, California Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Franchise Tax Board, Fair Political Practices Commission, Agricultural Labor Relations Board, and others).

Freelance Writing

  • My editorial articles have been purchased and published by The Kansas City Star, the Los Angeles Daily News, The Orange County Register, and the San Jose Mercury-News, among others. Publishers have purchased my articles on first submission more than 85 percent of the time.
