About THE ATHENÆUM THE ATHENÆUM
is a member of the American Booksellers Association and the Advanced Book
Exchange. It is named for the 19th-century London club whose patrons and
guests included many of the English scientists appearing in these pages,
as well as many of England's leading intellectuals in letters, religion,
and the arts. The Athenæum Club is still in business today.

The following table is provided so you know what we mean when we describe the condition of a book or letter. The condition is usually spelled out (Fine, Good, etc.), or, for books only, in an abbreviated form such as VG/G, where the first part is the book's condition and the second is the condition of the dust jacket. When "/--" appears (for example, VG/--), it means there is no dust jacket, either because the book was not published with one, or because a previous owner lost or discarded it.
| As New | The book is in the condition in which it was published. There are no defects except those as published. The dust jacket, if it the book was published with one, is in new condition, without any tears. |
| Fine (F) | Approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp. There are no defects. Any wear or other defects in the dust jacket are noted. |
| Very Good (VG) | A book that shows some small signs of wear but no tears on either binding or paper. Defects must be noted. |
| Good (G) | The average used worn book in which all pages
or leaves are present. Defects are noted.
We note significant defects to the dust jacket, but not those typical of average wear: nicks or very small chips along one or more edges, light rubbing here or there, and so on. |
| Fair | Worn book that has complete text pages (including
those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. Binding,
dust jacket, etc., may also be worn. Defects are noted.
We note significant defects to the dust jacket, but not those typical of average wear: nicks, very small chips or tears along one or more edges, light rubbing here or there, and so on. |
| Poor | A book that is sufficiently worn such that its only merit is as a Reading Copy because it does have the complete text, which is legible. Any missing maps or plates are noted. The book may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, and so on. |
